SEEDLESS #64

Shamwowie.

And a little blurb about my Longshot story that appeared in this month's Strange Tales MAX #3:

"Corey Lewis and Dylan McCrae's Longshot story is equally as colorful and energetic as Chua's story but also has an actual plotline to it. The graffiti-style artwork is full of tremendous bursts of excitement in service to a plot that's cleverly reminiscent of the original Longshot series."

Whole review here.

First time I've been accused of including a PLOTLINE! I like that my story was considered close to vintage Longshot. When I think about it, I guess it does. Longshot pretty much just dashes around and does random stuff. That's mah bag.

I'm now deep into work on my next fortunate Marvel gig- drawing CANNONBALL! here's a PANEL:

Stick figures YEAUH!

Uhhh.... I was gonna scan a new Sharknife panel, too. But it's like 5:30AM. Fun stuff happening tho.

Busy times [Nov. 10th, 2009|10:52 pm]

yfrontninja
Hey everyone! Wow, I've been busy recently. Remember that Batjerk character I mentioned a few weeks ago? Well, I did a short goofy Lere comic with him. It will be debuting in an anthology THIS WEEKEND AT EXPOZINE! Tim Carpenter/[info]robotarm posted his comic for the anthology in its entirety on his journal and it looks really, really nice.

Here are a couple pages from mine as well as Batjerk if you forget what the hell I'm talking about:

It's not my best work, but it was fun to do. Hey, if you're going to Expozine this weekend, drop by my table and say hi!

We're hosting Colleen MasIsaac/[info]galsan and Dorian Lang over the weekend.
Napoleonic nerdery explosion!

Anyway, I have some deadlines in the next couple of weeks, but hopefully after this weekend I'll be posting more. I'm working on a really, really exciting adventure/horror comic! It wont be posted online, but you'll be able to BUY IT in print in the new year. In addition to this I've got to finish Sexy Scrabble and Lady on the Lawn so I can show you different stuff online. I'm working on it!

Eye of the Tiger.

OPPS! DUDES! I forgot about this shit:

Little blurb about me in the latest BP in conjunction with the Gene Day Award nominees. YAY! Hi, MOM!

What's going on:

Nothing

I will be working on this book for the foreseeable future. The cover is in progress and I'm thinking it (and the title) will be publicized sometime in December. (Hint: the title has "Scott Pilgrim" in it and the cover has Scott Pilgrim on it)

We got a dog over the summer. You may have noticed me only posting dumb ol' dog pictures. Her name is Midge and she is part American Eskimo, part Pomeranian. I'm not sure which parts. She looks more like an Eskimo -- she's not insanely poofy like a Pom, but she has black and white spots (Eskimos are all-white).

So that's what's up. I got a dog and I'm drawing comics. I did a quick website drawing, mostly 'cause I took a picture over the weekend that I thought would work well on the website, and I drew a little wacom doodle using brushes that I downloaded the other day from this wonderful person.

Updates here will continue to be infrequent, but I'm usually found babbling on twitter.

Hello,

I'm back from seeing the world. SF to savannah to Seattle and back to Canada.
I brought back a garbage bag full of comics.
I'll have to write about it all more as I process it all.

Here's some of the drawing me and Marian did in SF sitting at the Neon Monster table
and that's Moritat with a fox.
fennec fox. I carry that picture in my wallet now.

and my road sketchbook-

Isotope comics in SF let me draw on a toilet seat to hang on their wall.

toilet seats are slippery and hard to draw on.
you can see the other seats here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/isotope/sets/789737/

Also In SF me and my pal Joe Keating got these fucking galactus sized pizza slices and watched the Spirit movie. I enjoyed the shit out of that film--the ass photocopying scene alone should get an Oscar eisner and tony baloney award.

And then on to Georgia:

Visiting SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) blew my mind.
I actually didn't think a place like that existed.
It felt like Hicksville, the Dylan Horrocks book about the fictinal town where everyone
reads comics if it was set in Wet moon.(I think it's where Ross based his book off of--so cool to see)

The whole place just moved different than I'm used to.
I went out walking along the cobblestone waterfront with a jazz horn playing in the
distance.I was wondering how anyone could even get into a fight in a town that mellow
and then the dude playing jazz switched to star wars music--mutherfucker.

Here's a talk that I was in my first night there--im on the right.

You can hear it here:
http://seqalab.com/?p=553

I really liked the teachers students and the other guests.
I'm not used to getting along with comic people that much.

So much good comics coming out of there.
Here's some art by one of the dudes I hung out with, Jeremy Sorese

more of his stuff here:
http://derbyartist.livejournal.com/

There's that Saul Williams line "not until you've heard Rakim on a rocky mountain top
have you heard hip hop" that is how I felt about looking at Derek Kirk Kim origonals
in the airport on the way out of town.

siiggghhhh. if comics will break your heart then I'm still deep in the honeymoon phase.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's some ish I've been reading since I got back-

I do like the Sienkiewicz cover but man this just reinforced all my worst
fears about how there's like 2 dudes that can write decent Conan.

So Conan falls in a magic time well and ends up in NYC--right. cool.
But why the fuck do they think that a dude who wore nothing but furs and metal
would sudenly start rolling as swass as this--

I don't like--well, pimps.
Crom...

and the fucking cat? Was that part of his blending in to modern civilization.
Like "normally I don't have a pet leopard but this is NYC soooooo."

Conan doesn't even wear a shirt why would he have a leopard?
It should really have just been called "What if Conan was retarded?"

Eventually it just degrades into some warriors bullshit.

and if that wasn't shitty enough Captain America shows up.
Is he still dead?

shit, he's not....

I stopped by my dear sweet mothers place and grabbed some of my old comics--

that high water mark of Shirow in the 80's

And I really like these flashback fantasy shots from Cyber 7

And along with that What if Conan --Justin passed on a copy of Shonen Jump from 88.
Nerd gold.

Jump with City Hunter is about as good as it gets.

I thought this was funny how in the middle of a chapter of Bastard with the
dude carying around this girl like so much sholder porn--they just thought it was cool to put in a Margaret ad with an infantchild sholdered the same way.

And I liked this one page rabbit thing.

Another thing from my moms place--GRUNTS!
A mirage (TMNT) Studios anthropomorphic war anthology,

There's a rad Peter Laird story in it with a Triceraton sargent talking about how
he lost his horn fighting space bears (Ursids!)
After breaking his horn off in one of their chests he goes back and
has it made into a knife. Badassery.

And here's some early THB, I really like the old Pope stuff when it was all
furs and coffee. plus it's nice to see a good photo cover.

Meanwhile back in vanoovverr james and Marley were making some impressive comics:

Stokoe's forthcoming ORC STAIN

And some Marley stuff for FORGETLESS, a 5 issue mini-series coming from Image in December.

I hadn't though about it before now but I like the contrast in how male and female J and M's stuff is. mmmmm

Also I don't type enough about Justin's stuff on here, one of my favorate dudes on the planet.
He's kind of the godfather of my group of dudes and he draws damned good too.

Here's a King city painting he did-

Here's his Deviantart-
http://moritat.deviantart.com/
and here too
http://diemoritat.blogspot.com/

And now I'm back in my place catching up on the million things I'm almost late on.
I think the neweset issue of Wizard magazine has a thing on King city. so weird.

Here's an Appleseed thing I drew my last night in Seattle.
All or nothing, this is love.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest [Nov. 5th, 2009|01:15 pm]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be giving ten random users paid account credits.

Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC [Oct. 30th, 2009|05:17 pm]

lj_maintenance

[dwell]
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content! [Oct. 29th, 2009|10:53 am]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

Spotlight community of the week

Lost his cat pajamas.... [Oct. 28th, 2009|11:53 pm]

yfrontninja

Hey everyone.

I'll be at Canzine in Toronto this weekend! If you're there come by my table and buy- I mean... say hello. There will be some new print stuff and some old print stuff.

I'm not going to get this comic done for Halloween (HA HA HAAAAH) like I had wanted to (HAH), since there are 8-9 more pages to color and I take a long time with each page. I'm not really sure what you think of this one, but I'm going to finish it. It's all a learning experience. It gets crazier, perhaps a little tasteless. You'll have to wait and see.

Since I really want to finish Sexy Scrabble up (it was here first, dammit) I hope to wrap this project up next week. I hope. HOPE. I've got a lot on my plate right now, and sadly, many things that I can't share with you for a while yet.

Sorry if the small amount of penis in this is not your style. I wasn't sure about ljcut, since I figure I've seen enough David-style nudity to become pretty much desensitized to it. HA! I am SO not comparing this to REAL ART. HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAA.

All so far.....

A couple naked lady doodles so we have something for everyone... )
